O Gajo

O GAJO was born in Lisboa, Portugal, in the autumn of 2016.
Inspired by his World Music references, João Morais, after 30 years dedicated to Punk Rock, delved into the roots of Portuguese music and discovered the Viola Campaniça, a chordophone that is part of Portuguese centuries-old and cultural history. Since then, the adventure has gone through different latitudes, 5 original albums
and an extensive list of live performances with surprising collaborations that expanded the sound and potencial of this Viola.
The spring of 2025 will bring a new album called “Trovoada”, which features acstrong rhythm section, the crossing of the Viola campaniça with the Sanfona and the Cavaquinho, and for the first time the introduction of voice and lyrics in a mor consistent way.
The journey continues through a timeless Mediterranean always guided by the sound of the Viola Campaniça.
